Melkus was founded by racing driver Heinz Melkus and was East Germany’s only sports car.  Based on a Wartburg and with a fibreglass body, the RS 1000 was built from 1969.  Production stopped in 1986 with a new company building the RS 2000 from 2009 to 2012, until the firm went bankrupt.
