Together with Panhard & Levassor, Peugeot is the oldest producer of cars in the world. With a long history in manufacture, it was Armand Peugeot (1849-1915) who was responsible for building the first car which went into production in 1891, when five cars were built. Over many decades, Peugeot has become one of France’s most successful manufacturers of vehicles. Its cars have a reputation for reliability and sporting success, particularly in rallying. The company took over Citroën in 1975 and then the European division of Chrysler and currently builds cars in China in collaboration with Dongfeng. PSA Peugeot Citroën has an operational base in Sochaux, where it also has an excellent museum displaying not just vehicles, but products that were made before the 1890’s, plus bicycles and motorbikes.
