SS (Swallow Coachbuilding Co. Ltd.), was founded by William Lyons and William Walmsley and began by manufacturing streamlined bodies for sidecars. After this, the company built special coachwork bodies for existing cars, such as Austin, before in 1931 the first SS appeared, the SS 1, which had a Standard engine. Successes for their sports cars followed, with the Jaguar name being introduced in 1934 by William Lyons. In 1945 the company became Jaguar Cars Ltd., with the Swallow tradename being sold.
