ZIS stands for Zavod Imjeni Stalina. The company’s first car, the L1 appeared in 1933 and was built in Leningrad before production moved to Moscow in 1936. The firm specialised in building limousines for the Soviet government, with the name changing in 1958 to ZIL (Zavod Imjeni Likchacev), after its director Ivan Likchacev. For decades, very expensive ZIL limousines continued to be built in very small numbers, with the last car being manufactured in 2012.
